X Launches "About This Account": Here's Everything You Need To Know

X's About This Account is an information given feature that was introduced to curb fake accounts, misinformation, and fraud on the social platform.
X's "About This Account"

X profile is getting more modifications with a new feature the platform is currently rolling out to its users. The feature, called "About This Account," is what X says will display individual and business X accounts, including the account's country of origin, numbers of times the account has changed its handle, the account creation date, and how the account user installed the X mobile app.

In addition to that, if the account is connected via the web, it will be highlighted in the about this account page. Meanwhile, it's important to note that this feature isn't just added to beautify the X platform, but the purpose is to make the information displaying on the about-this-account's page to reduce inauthentic engagement on X.

The platform argues that bots often pretend to be humans, so giving users access to deeper account details will make it easier to spot suspicious profiles, identify unusual activity, and distinguish real users from automated accounts. X specifically stated that this feature is targeting bad actor, bot, and people looking to sow discord or spread misinformation using the platform.

Netizens have reacted to this update in many ways. Some Reddit users are happy about the feature while some are criticizing the idea, citing that Elon Musk is often involved in disinformation campaigns and even ends up fighting against his own AI agent and Community Notes because of it.

Netizens reactions

Even on X platform, there are many critics there worrying about doxxing, opt-out loopholes, and errors. Many of them call the X's About This Account a "waste" amid bigger platform issues like poor support.

X users reaction

It's also worth noting that while many users have reported that they've seen the "about this account" on others X account, many users globally have not been able to access this account information on other people’s profiles. X says it's rolling it out, so it may take some times before it reaches you. The platform started testing the feature last month, so it may need more time for the launch to reach all users.

Currently, the feature let you see your basic profile details like join date, username changes, and location by tapping the "Joined" link below your bio on the X app or via X website. This information is only visible to you, as the platform is gradually expanding access to other users' profiles in phases to test and refine the tool.

The gradual rolls out helps ensure stability before full deployment, though many are still waiting for it to appear on non-personal profiles. For location specifics, the default view shows the user's country based on factors like IP address or app store data, but individuals can switch to a region or continent for more privacy via the "About your account" options in the Privacy and Safety menu.

X product head Nikita Bier has confirmed upcoming privacy controls that will be clearly marked on opted-in profiles to signal user choices. Additionally, if someone connects through a VPN, a notice may appear stating that the country or region details could be unreliable, a detail uncovered by app code analysts and aimed at flagging potential inaccuracies.
